Fort Victoria was a fur trading post founded by the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) on southern Vancouver Island in 1843. Subsequently, it became the headquarters of HBC operations in the vast New Caledonia District and was the forerunner of a settlement that eventually grew into the modern city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
