Dement, John

One month after his brief visit to Fort Victoria in March of 1850, he seized the HBC vessel Cadboro at Fort Nisqually on instructions from the United States Government for non-payment of customs duties. The following year Lt. Dement was sent north to the Queen Charlotte Islands where he negotiated the release of a number of American gold miners being held by a group of indigenous residents following the wreckage of their ship.
